Photography
I come from a long line of shutterbugs. My mother taught me how to adjust the shutter speed and aperture dials on her metal Pentax SLR so the little light meter needle in the viewfinder floated just right. And when I was a teenager saving up to buy my own camera but only had enough for a body, my grandfather gave me my first 50mm lens.
My favourites are street and candid photography—the heightened attunement to the world as you seek the spontaneous alignment of composition, light, and moment.
A camera is another kind of sketchbook: a way to generate ideas and interpretations of things around me, attempt to capture and express those ideas, and evaluate the results. And when it works, it's magic.
